People behind Nifty after Fifty
Sheldon S. Zinberg, MD
As the author of a highly praised book on aging, “Win in the Second Half” – and recently published as a second edition titled “Nifty after Fifty,” Dr. Zinberg is an expert on fitness and disease management in the boomer/senior demographic and the inspiration behind Nifty after Fifty. Dr. Zinberg received an MD degree from the University of California, Irvine College of Medicine. Shortly thereafter, he completed a three-year residency in Internal Medicine followed by a three year Clinical Research Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Los Angeles County Hospital. While in private practice, Dr. Zinberg served as a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California Irvine, College of Medicine and also at the COMP division of the Western University of Health Sciences. Respected by his colleagues, he also had the opportunity to serve as president of several prestigious organizations (The Alumni Association of UCI College of Medicine, The Orange County Society of Gastroenterology, and The UCI Gastroenterology Alumni Association etc).
In 1993, capitalizing on the experience gained in 35 years of academic and clinical medicine, Dr. Zinberg founded CareMore Medical Group. He built CareMore into a profitable provider of health care services to over 100,000 patients, twenty percent of which were seniors. Under Dr. Zinberg’s guidance, CareMore developed innovative programs targeted at helping seniors to become more independent and less susceptible to illness and injury.
As the founder of Nifty after Fifty (The Most Effective Centers for Wellness and Lasting Independence), Dr. Zinberg has continued to publish his views on improving delivery systems for the healthcare industry.
Mike Merino has over 25 years of experience in the senior healthcare arena. He is a nationally recognized consultant speaking on a variety of subjects including developing partnerships across the Unites States. He served as President and CEO of Sterling Healthcare Management; as CEO for Southern Indian Health Counsel; and was the Senior Vice President and COO of CareMore Medical Group.
Throughout his career, Mr. Merino has been intricately involved in healthcare operations for mature adults for over twenty-five years. He has been involved in the formation of physician/hospital organizations in Hawaii, California, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Kentucky; and speaking to physician and hospital organizations on various subjects including developing partnerships across the United States. He held the position of CEO for a healthcare consortium for Native Americans in San Diego, California. Mr. Merino also played a large role during the formation of CareMore, a leader in health care. In 2004, he returned to CareMore where he assumed the position of Senior Vice President and COO and was instrumental in the sale of that entity to JP Morgan Partners.
With more than 30 years of experience as a physical therapist in Southern California, Mr. Nelson has worked extensively in both orthopedic and neurological settings. His vast knowledge and expertise set both the standard for patient care and the tone for our Physical Therapy Department. Mr. Nelson achieved his Master’s in Physical Therapy with Clinical Specialization in Neurology from the University of Southern California. He was Administrative Director of Physical Rehabilitation Services at Downey Regional Medical Center and Director of Physical Therapy at CareMore Medical Management. He has also held teaching positions at Cerritos College, California State University Long Beach, and the University of Southern California.
